The best AI screenshot tools for Windows
The short answer
Built into Windows, Copilot can look at a window you share with it, and Click to Do acts on anything on screen, but only on Copilot+ PCs. ChatGPT's desktop app can send the window in front of you to a chat, and Google's Lens sees what you select in Chrome or, through the Google app for Windows, anywhere on screen. Cluely and Highlight run as always-available assistants. ScreenFeel is the one built around private capture: any app, any Windows 10 or 11 PC, captures kept on your PC, and one image sent only when you ask.
What to check before you choose
- Where it works: every app, or only the browser?
- When it looks: only when you ask, or continuously in the background?
- What happens to the image: kept with your history, used for training, or discarded after the answer?
- What it gives back: search results, a chat reply, or a specific, structured answer such as a table or a fix?
Microsoft Copilot and Click to Do
Copilot on Windows can be shown an app or window and asked about it during a voice conversation — the feature Microsoft calls Vision; see ScreenFeel vs Copilot Vision for how the two differ. How much of Vision you get depends on your Microsoft plan and on usage limits Microsoft says will vary. Click to Do is the faster gesture — hold the Windows key and click something on screen for a menu of actions — but it requires a Copilot+ PC. Copilot sends what it is shown to Microsoft's cloud; Click to Do analyses the screen on the PC itself and hands only some actions, such as web searches, to online services.
ChatGPT's desktop app
ChatGPT's desktop app for Windows can send the window in front of you into a chat — press both Alt keys for what OpenAI calls an appshot — and the older app, now called ChatGPT Classic, takes screenshots from its Alt+Space window. It is a general chat assistant rather than a capture tool, so each question is a new upload into a conversation, stored with your chat history under OpenAI's settings for your account.
Google Lens, in Chrome and on the desktop
Right-click a page in Chrome, choose Search with Google Lens, and drag over anything to get matches, text and often an AI overview. Chrome's Lens only sees the browser tab; Google's app for Windows, released in English in 2026, opens with Alt+Space and lets Lens select anything on screen. Both are free and excellent for identifying things and shopping, and both send what you select to Google.
Cluely and Highlight AI
Both are always-available desktop assistants that can see your screen and help in real time, aimed at meetings and work across apps. Both have paid plans, and both process what they see in the cloud. The comparisons ScreenFeel vs Cluely and ScreenFeel vs Highlight AI set out the differences row by row, including when each is the better buy.
ScreenFeel, built around private capture
ScreenFeel is a Windows screenshot app with sixteen AI lenses, each built for one job and answering in a fixed shape: Read text copies text verbatim, To data turns tables and charts into CSV, Fix error diagnoses an error, Translate translates in place, Find secrets flags what should not be shared, and Auto works out what you captured. It answers Print Screen, works in any app, keeps every capture in a searchable local library, and has a full editor and presenter tools.
Nothing watches your screen. A lens sends one image, once, when you run it, to a model hosted under zero data retention that keeps nothing and trains on nothing. Capturing, editing and the library are free without an account; the lenses come with a free monthly allowance.
Questions people also ask
Which AI screenshot tool is free?
Google Lens, in Chrome or the Google app for Windows, and Click to Do, on Copilot+ PCs, are free. Copilot and ChatGPT have free tiers with limits, and Copilot's Vision depends on your Microsoft plan. ScreenFeel's capture, editor and library are free, and its AI lenses include a free monthly allowance.
Do AI screenshot tools see my whole screen all the time?
Some assistants are designed to watch continuously. Others, including ScreenFeel, only see what you capture, when you capture it. Check each tool's documentation for whether it runs in the background.
Can AI read a screenshot offline?
Text recognition can: Snipping Tool's Text actions and PowerToys Text Extractor run on your PC. Explaining, translating or solving with a large AI model needs an internet connection with every tool listed here. In ScreenFeel, capturing, editing, search and redaction work offline; only the lenses go online.
