How to copy text from a video

The short answer

Pause the video on a sharp frame, then copy the text off the screen: on Windows 11, capture it with Win+Shift+S and use Snipping Tool's Text actions; on Windows 10 or 11, PowerToys Text Extractor (Win+Shift+T) copies whatever you drag over. For code, slides or tables, ScreenFeel's Grab code, Read text and To data lenses keep the indentation and layout. If you need everything that is said rather than shown, open the video's transcript instead.

First, get a sharp frame

  • Pause between transitions. A frame caught mid-fade blurs the text.
  • Raise the quality. Choose the highest resolution the player offers before you pause; compressed video smears small type.
  • Go full screen so the text is as large as possible when you capture it.
  • Hide the controls. Move the pointer away so the player's bar and captions do not cover the text.

Copy the text with the tools in Windows

On Windows 11, press Win+Shift+S, drag around the text, open the capture in Snipping Tool and choose Text actions, then Copy all text. On Windows 10 or 11, Microsoft's free PowerToys add Text Extractor: press Win+Shift+T, drag a box over the text, and it is on your clipboard. Both read text locally and return it as plain text. Code from a tutorial video: keep the indentation

Plain text recognition flattens code: indentation disappears, quotes turn curly, and l, 1 and I swap places. ScreenFeel's Grab code lens returns a single code block tagged with the right language, with indentation, symbols and identifiers reproduced character for character. When a line runs off the edge of the frame it completes it only where that is unambiguous, and marks every completed line with a comment so you can see what was inferred.

Slides, tables and charts from a talk

For a slide full of bullet points, Read text keeps the lists as lists. For a table or a chart on a slide, To data returns the rows as a table and as CSV you can paste into a spreadsheet, and says when it had to estimate values from a chart's axis. Capture each slide once and every one stays in your local library, searchable by the text it contains.

When you need what was said: the transcript

Capturing frames is for what is shown. For what is said, use the transcript. On YouTube in a browser, expand the description under the video and choose Show transcript; the panel can be copied once you hide timestamps. Recorded meetings in Teams and Zoom usually come with a transcript too, if transcription was on during the call.

Questions people also ask

Can I copy text from a YouTube video?

Yes. For words on screen, pause and capture the frame, then use Snipping Tool's Text actions, PowerToys Text Extractor or ScreenFeel's Read text lens. For the spoken words, open Show transcript from the video's description.

How do I copy code from a video tutorial without retyping it?

Pause on the frame with the code, capture it, and use a reader that keeps formatting. ScreenFeel's Grab code lens returns a fenced code block with the language, indentation and identifiers intact.

Why is the copied text full of mistakes?

Video compression blurs small text. Raise the playback quality, go full screen and pause on a still frame before capturing, and capture only the part with text.

Next time, it is one key

ScreenFeel answers the Print Screen key on Windows 10 and 11. Select anything in any app, then copy it, translate it or ask about it. Capturing is free forever; the AI lenses come with a free monthly allowance.
